Accompanied by his father, Warren, and society chairman Peter Hunt, 11 year old Lea Fielding got his first taste of fishing on Friday. The venue was M & D A S’s Little Lake on Treowen estate, and it didn’t disappoint.

Even though Leo had never fished before he quickly picked up the very basics of casting, handling and unhooking of fish using a whip before transferring to a conventional rod and reel.
We soon lost count of how many rudd he caught, some nice ones as well, but also several little tench and three perch were caught as well, all on sweetcorn.

We all enjoyed the experience and three hours went fast. Somehow I think this won’t be Leo’s last fishing trip.
Monmouth and District Angling Society can provide free fishing experience trips for youngsters who have never fished before.
Lovely story.
Fishing was a popular hobby in the 1960s and 70s when I was growing up. Sadly now unusual for kids to fish, but the ones that do will be the best custodians of the nations waters in decades to come. NF.
